Skillz or as old hip-hop heads may know him, Mad Skillz; is back with a new album for 2008 with a message packed in. After a long series of mixtape releases Skillz has released the album “Million Dollar Backpack” which should be on the to-get list for any lyric lover’s album list. Skillz gives testament to his longevity in the industry in the opening track “The million dollar backpack” which he states all the rappers who use to sport the backpack and what it represents; and on track 5 “Sick” he boast about his lyrical style and how he has been supreme with his flow since the first days of hip-hop. I would have to say my favorite track off this album would have to be the track “Im Gon Make It” and “For Real”. The album has incredible story telling capability and contains none of the party and b.s. records most rappers and record executives produce now. The track which makes the biggest statement on the album would have to be “Hip Hop Died”, which takes aim at the executives who only want hip-hop as long as it generates revenue. Overall, Skillz created a great album and can be played from beginning to end. ~R. Esquire
